About Magdalen Islands

The Magdalen Islands are a chain of islands in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, most of them linked by long ribbons of sand dunes. Red sandstone cliffs, grassy hills and brightly painted houses set the scene, and the population is largely French-speaking, with Acadian roots, alongside small English-speaking communities on Entry Island and Grosse-Île.

On Havre-Aubert, La Grave historic site preserves weathered fishing sheds now home to shops and cafes, Artisans du Sable sells crafts made from sand, and the Musée de la Mer tells the archipelago's maritime story. Beaches are the main attraction, from Sandy Hook dune to wide stretches near Pointe-aux-Loups, and the steady wind makes the islands a favorite for kitesurfing. Cap-aux-Meules is the commercial center, Havre-aux-Maisons has some of the most photogenic cliffs, and Grande-Entrée is a working fishing harbour. Boat trips reach Entry Island, while wildlife enthusiasts look toward the protected bird colonies of Brion Island and the Bird Rocks.

The islands suit travelers who like cycling, beachcombing, seafood and a slower rhythm. Summer is the main season and lodging fills early. In late winter, guided trips go out to see harp seal pups on the ice.

Best seasonJuly and August bring the warmest weather; late winter draws visitors for seal-pup watching.
Ideal stayFive days to a week allows time to explore each island by bike or car.
ArrivingTravelers arrive by car ferry from Souris, Prince Edward Island, or by regional flights.
