About Tadoussac

Tadoussac is a small village on the north shore of the St. Lawrence, at the mouth of the Saguenay Fjord. It is one of the oldest European trading sites in Canada, where French traders met Innu people around 1600, and the mix of cold, deep water from the fjord with the tidal river creates a feeding ground that draws whales each season.

Whale watching is the main reason most people come. Cruises in large boats or fast zodiacs head into the Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park, where belugas live year-round and larger whales arrive in summer, while sea kayaking offers a quieter encounter close to shore. From Pointe-de-l'Islet, a short trail sometimes allows whale sightings from land. The marine mammal centre provides context, and the little wooden Chapelle de Tadoussac and the Église Sainte-Croix recall the village's long history. Sandy Pointe-Rouge beach, the dunes and the Moulin-à-Baude area round out a stay.

Tadoussac suits nature lovers, families and photographers, and its compact layout makes it easy to explore on foot. Summer and early fall are the main season, and many businesses close in winter. Trails in Saguenay Fjord National Park begin nearby, and the Prince Shoal lighthouse can be seen offshore.

Best seasonJune through early October, when whale-watching cruises run and marine life is most active.
Ideal stayTwo to three days allows a cruise, a kayak outing and some fjord hiking.
ArrivingTravelers drive Route 138 from Quebec City and cross the Saguenay on a free ferry.
