About Baie-Saint-Paul

Baie-Saint-Paul is a small town in Charlevoix, set in a broad valley where the Gouffre River meets the St. Lawrence, surrounded by steep wooded hills. Painters have been drawn to its light and landscapes for generations, and the town has a long reputation as an artists' colony. It is also known as the place where the street performers who went on to found Cirque du Soleil got their start.

Place de l'Église and Rue Saint-Jean-Baptiste form the heart of town, lined with galleries, bakeries, boutiques and restaurants in old wooden houses. The Musée d'art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul focuses on modern and contemporary work, while the Espace muséal des Petites Franciscaines de Marie tells the story of the nuns who served the community. The restored Moulin de la Rémy shows how grain was once milled. For views over the bay and valley, the belvedere at the tourist office and the Phare du Cap-aux-Corbeaux lookout are worthwhile stops.

Baie-Saint-Paul suits art lovers, food travelers and anyone touring Charlevoix by car. The scenic Route du Fleuve follows the river toward La Malbaie, and the slopes of Le Massif de Charlevoix are close by for winter skiing. Summer and fall are the liveliest seasons.

Best seasonLate June to mid-October brings gallery season and fall color; winter suits skiers.
Ideal stayTwo days covers the town, its museums and a drive along the Route du Fleuve.
