About Kouchibouguac National Park

Kouchibouguac National Park lies on New Brunswick's eastern shore, where the Northumberland Strait meets a coast of lagoons, salt marshes, bogs and forest. A chain of barrier islands, built of shifting sand dunes, shelters the shoreline and gives the park its distinctive character. The surrounding region is largely Acadian, and the Mi'kmaq have long ties to this coast as well.

The Visitor Centre is the place to begin, with exhibits and trail information. Kelly's Beach, reached by a boardwalk over dunes and lagoon, offers warm water for swimming by Atlantic Canadian standards. Paddlers explore the Kouchibouguac River and the lagoons by canoe or kayak, and an extensive network of bike paths winds through the forest. A bog trail with a boardwalk and lookout tower reveals carnivorous plants and a bird's-eye view. Guided outings in season visit the barrier islands, where grey and harbour seals haul out, and Cap-St-Louis offers coastal views. Côte-à-Fabien and South Kouchibouguac host campgrounds.

Beyond the park, La Dune de Bouctouche stretches into the bay with a long boardwalk, and Le Pays de la Sagouine presents Acadian culture through theater and music. Richibucto is a nearby service town. The park suits families, cyclists and campers. Summer is busiest, while winter brings cross-country skiing.

Best seasonJuly and August for warm beach days and seal tours; September is quieter and still mild.
Ideal stayTwo to three days allows biking, beach time and a paddle on the lagoons.
ArrivingMost visitors drive north from Moncton, the nearest city and airport, along Route 11.
