About Fundy National Park

Fundy National Park protects a stretch of forested highland and rugged shoreline on the New Brunswick side of the Bay of Fundy, the inlet famous for having some of the highest tides on Earth. Twice a day the sea drains out of the coves and then returns, raising the water level by many meters and reshaping the view from every beach. Inland, the Caledonia Highlands roll away in a mix of spruce, fir and hardwood cut by deep river valleys.

Timing a visit around the tide is part of the routine here. At low water people stroll across the exposed ocean floor near Alma and the tidal harbour, and a few hours later the same coves fill enough for kayaking. Short trails lead to Dickson Falls, tucked into a mossy ravine, and to Point Wolfe, where a red covered bridge spans the river mouth. The Caribou Plain boardwalk crosses a bog and beaver pond, while longer routes such as the Dobson Trail connect toward the demanding Fundy Footpath. Moose, deer and seabirds turn up often.

The park works well for families and campers as much as hikers, with a golf course, an outdoor pool and several campgrounds near the headquarters area. Alma supplies lobster rolls, bakeries and small inns. Summer and early fall are the busiest seasons, and the autumn color in the highlands is especially rewarding.

Best seasonSummer through early October, when trails, campgrounds and kayak outings are open and fall color lights up the highlands.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers the tides, waterfalls and a few good hikes.
ArrivingMost visitors drive in via Highway 114, with Moncton's airport the closest major air gateway.
