About Campobello Island

Campobello Island sits at the mouth of Passamaquoddy Bay in New Brunswick, closer to the coast of Maine than to the rest of Canada. A bridge connects it to Lubec, Maine, while a seasonal ferry links it to Deer Island. Fishing has long sustained the island, and its quiet coves, spruce woods and weathered wharves reflect that maritime life.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt spent boyhood summers here and kept coming back as an adult, and his family cottage is now the centerpiece of an international park. Roosevelt Campobello International Park, jointly managed by Canada and the United States, preserves the Roosevelt Cottage with original furnishings, and the Edmund S. Muskie Visitor Centre provides background. Out on the island, Head Harbour Lighthouse can be reached on foot only at low tide, which makes timing important, while Mulholland Point Lighthouse overlooks the bridge and is a good spot to watch for seals and whales. Herring Cove Provincial Park has beaches, trails and camping.

Welshpool and Wilson's Beach are small fishing communities with wharves and simple services. Across the bridge, West Quoddy Head Light in Lubec marks the easternmost point of the contiguous United States. Campobello suits history enthusiasts, walkers and those seeking a slow, coastal pace. Summer is the main season.

Best seasonJune through September, when the international park, ferries and island services are fully running.
Ideal stayOne or two days covers the Roosevelt site, lighthouses and coastal trails.
ArrivingMost visitors drive across the bridge from Lubec, Maine, or take the summer ferry from Deer Island.
