About Caraquet

Caraquet stretches along the shore of Chaleur Bay on New Brunswick's Acadian Peninsula, and it is widely regarded as a cultural capital of Acadia. The town's long main street follows the coast for kilometers, with churches, houses and fishing infrastructure strung out along the water. French is the language of daily life, and Acadian identity is expressed openly through flags, music and food.

The Village Historique Acadien, west of town, recreates Acadian life over several generations with costumed interpreters, period houses and working trades, and the Hôtel Château Albert lets guests sleep in a reconstructed early twentieth-century hotel. In town, the Musée acadien de Caraquet presents local history, and the Sainte-Anne-du-Bocage shrine is a peaceful place of pilgrimage by the shore. The wharf and Port of Caraquet remain active with fishing boats, and the Carrefour de la Mer offers a waterfront gathering place. Beaches on Chaleur Bay invite walks and swimming on warm days.

The Festival acadien brings concerts and events each August, culminating in the Tintamarre on August 15, when residents parade through the streets making joyful noise. The Théâtre populaire d'Acadie stages French-language productions. Haut-Caraquet and Bas-Caraquet extend the shoreline in each direction. Caraquet suits culture-focused travelers and families. Summer is the liveliest season.

Best seasonJuly and August, especially around the Festival acadien and the August 15 Tintamarre.
Ideal stayTwo or three days allows time for the historic village, the waterfront and nearby islands.
