About Fremont

Twenty sparkling sandpit lakes lie just west of Fremont, and on summer weekends half of eastern Nebraska seems to be camping on their shores. The city itself, home to about 27,000 people, sits on the north bank of the Platte River about 35 miles northwest of Omaha and serves as the seat of Dodge County.

Founded in 1856 and named for the explorer John C. Fremont, the town grew along the Platte valley route used by westbound travelers and later the Union Pacific railroad. Its prosperity shows in the brick blocks downtown, the restored 1888 Love-Larson Opera House and the Louis E. May Museum, an Italianate mansion built by the city's first mayor.

Fremont makes a relaxed base for exploring the Platte valley. Shady Barnard Park is ringed by historic homes, the Dodge County Courthouse anchors the civic center, and Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area offers swimming, fishing and campsites. Omaha's museums and zoo are less than an hour away.

Best seasonJune to August for swimming and camping at Fremont Lakes; spring and fall for milder weather downtown.
Ideal stayA day or a camping weekend at the lakes.
ArrivingOmaha's Eppley Airfield is about 45 minutes southeast via US-275 or US-30.
