About Sioux City

Sioux City is a river city of about 85,000 people where Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota meet on the Missouri River. It grew as a steamboat landing and stockyards town, and its story is tied to the Lewis and Clark expedition, whose only member to die on the journey, Sergeant Charles Floyd, is buried on a bluff overlooking the river.

The 100-foot Sergeant Floyd Monument was the first registered National Historic Landmark in the United States, and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center on the riverfront brings the expedition to life with exhibits and animatronic figures. The Sioux City Public Museum covers local history, and the Woodbury County Courthouse is a celebrated Prairie School building with a striking glass dome and murals.

Historic Fourth Street has restored brick buildings with bars and restaurants, and the Orpheum Theatre hosts the symphony and touring shows. Stone State Park offers wooded Loess Hills trails and river views, while casinos and riverfront parks line the water.

Best seasonMay to October for river parks and Loess Hills trails, with fall color in late September.
Ideal stayOne to two days for Lewis and Clark sites, the courthouse and Fourth Street.
ArrivingSioux Gateway Airport is just south of the city; Omaha's airport is about 90 minutes away.
