Lee's Summit is a city of about 100,000 people southeast of Kansas City, one of the fastest-growing communities in Missouri. Founded in 1865 as a railroad town, it sits on one of the highest points between Kansas City and St. Louis, and its charming downtown has been revived into one of the best small-town main streets in the metro area.
Downtown Lee's Summit has historic brick buildings full of restaurants, wine bars, breweries and boutiques, plus a farmers market and festivals throughout the year. The Third Street and Howard historic districts preserve early homes, and the grave of outlaw Cole Younger, of the James-Younger Gang, lies in the city's historic cemetery.
Lakes surround the city. Longview Lake and Lake Jacomo in Fleming Park offer boating, fishing, beaches and trails, and Raintree Lake is a quieter neighborhood lake. Unity Village, the headquarters of the Unity spiritual movement, has a striking tower, gardens and a fountain on its peaceful grounds just north of town.
Large reservoir run by Jackson County on the west side of Lee's Summit, with a swimming beach, marina, boat ramps, campground and a paved trail along the shore. It is popular for fishing, sailing and biking. Bring a bike for the trail, and check beach hours, which are limited to summer.
Lake in Fleming Park on the northeast edge of Lee's Summit, known for sailing, fishing and pontoon rentals from its marina. Wooded hills and picnic areas surround the water. Rent a boat for a few hours on a summer day, and look for deer along the park roads in the evening.
Living history village in Fleming Park made of more than 25 historic buildings moved from around western Missouri, including homes, a church, a tavern and a blacksmith shop. Costumed interpreters show life in the 1850s. Check event days, when demonstrations and crafts are offered.
Grave of Cole Younger, the outlaw and former member of the James-Younger gang, who spent his last years in Lee's Summit and died there in 1916. It lies in the old Lee's Summit Historical Cemetery. Visit respectfully, and look for other early settler graves nearby.
Historic residential area near downtown with homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s in Victorian, Craftsman and other styles. Tree-lined streets make it nice for a slow walk. The houses are private, so enjoy them from the sidewalk, then head downtown for food.
Lively historic downtown with brick buildings housing local restaurants, wine bars, boutiques and antique shops. It hosts festivals such as Downtown Days, concerts and a farmers market. Visit on a weekend evening for the busiest dining scene, and park in the free public garages.
Seasonal farmers market in downtown Lee's Summit under a covered pavilion, with local produce, meat, eggs, baked goods, honey and flowers. It runs on set mornings from spring into fall. Come early for the best choice, then walk to a downtown cafe for breakfast.
Headquarters campus of the Unity spiritual movement, with Spanish Mission style buildings, a tall bell tower, fountains, a rose garden and walking trails. Visitors are welcome to stroll the grounds and visit the chapel. Come in late spring or summer when the gardens are in bloom.
Lee's Summit's largest city park, with a community center and indoor pool, sports fields, a lake, playgrounds and miles of paved trails. It is busy with youth sports on weekends. Walk or bike the trail loop, and use the community center on hot or rainy days.
Central city park close to downtown with shaded lawns, a playground, picnic shelters and space for community events and summer concerts. It is easy to combine with a downtown visit. Bring a picnic from a downtown deli and relax under the trees.
City-run outdoor water park with water slides, a lazy river, a zero-depth area for small kids and a lap pool. It is a favorite summer outing for local families. It is open only in summer, so check the schedule, and arrive at opening to grab a shaded spot.
