About Kansas City

Kansas City, Kansas, is the Kansas side of the metro, a city of about 155,000 people where the Kansas River meets the Missouri. It shares a unified government with Wyandotte County, named for the Wyandot people who settled here in the 1840s and whose burial ground, the Huron Indian Cemetery, still sits downtown. Waves of immigrants from Croatia, Mexico and elsewhere shaped its neighborhoods and its food.

Food is one of the best reasons to visit. Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que, famously tucked inside a gas station, is one of the most celebrated barbecue joints in the country, and the Strawberry Hill Museum tells the story of the Croatian community on the bluff above downtown. Kaw Point Park marks where Lewis and Clark camped at the river confluence in 1804, with views of the Kansas City, Missouri skyline.

The western side of the city is a sports and shopping hub. Kansas Speedway hosts NASCAR races, Children's Mercy Park is home to Sporting Kansas City soccer, and Legends Outlets fills the area with shops and restaurants. Wyandotte County Lake Park offers a large lake, boat docks and wooded trails, and the Quindaro Townsite preserves the ruins of a free-state river town linked to the Underground Railroad.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October for barbecue patios, ball games and lake trails.
Ideal stayOne day for barbecue, Strawberry Hill and Kaw Point, two with a race or soccer match.
ArrivingKansas City International Airport is about 20 miles north; a car is the easiest way to get around.
