About Île d'Orléans

Île d'Orléans is a pastoral island in the St. Lawrence River, just downstream from Quebec City and linked to the mainland by a bridge. Settled early in the French colonial period, it is often described as a cradle of French America, and its six villages keep stone farmhouses, old churches and long, narrow fields that run down to the water.

A loop road circles the island, making it ideal for a slow drive or bike ride. Sainte-Pétronille, at the western tip, has views back toward the city and a striking look at the Chute Montmorency across the river. Heading east, Saint-Pierre offers the first farm stands and producers, while Saint-Laurent's Parc maritime recalls a tradition of boatbuilding. The Manoir Mauvide-Genest preserves an eighteenth-century manor house, and Sainte-Famille and Saint-François, at the quieter eastern tip, have some of the oldest buildings and broad river views. Along the way, stops such as Cidrerie Verger Bilodeau, Vignoble Isle de Bacchus and Vignoble du Mitan offer tastings of cider, wine and local products.

The island suits food lovers, cyclists and anyone wanting a calm countryside outing near Quebec City. Summer brings strawberries and berries, while fall is apple season.

Best seasonJuly to October, from berry season through the apple harvest and fall color.
Ideal stayA full day covers the loop road; an overnight allows a slower pace.
ArrivingThe island is reached by car or bike over the bridge from Quebec City's eastern outskirts.
