About Milford

Milford is a coastal city of about 52,000 people on Long Island Sound in Connecticut, between New Haven and Bridgeport. Founded in 1639 by English Puritan settlers, it grew up around the Wepawaug River and a long town green that is still the heart of its downtown, lined with historic churches, shops and restaurants.

Milford has about 17 miles of shoreline, and its beaches are its biggest draw. At Silver Sands State Park a sandbar called a tombolo leads at low tide to Charles Island, where legend says Captain Kidd buried treasure. A boardwalk links Silver Sands to Walnut Beach, and the Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center at Milford Point watches over salt marshes at the mouth of the Housatonic River.

Downtown, the 1889 Memorial Bridge honors the city's founders, the Milford Historical Society's Wharf Lane Complex preserves colonial houses, and the harbor fills with boats in summer. The Milford Oyster Festival each August draws big crowds, and the Metro-North station makes Milford an easy day trip from New York City.

Best seasonJune to September for beaches and the August Oyster Festival; spring and fall are best for birdwatching.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the beaches, downtown green and coastal center.
ArrivingMetro-North's New Haven Line stops in downtown Milford, about 1 hour 40 minutes from Grand Central; Interstate 95 runs through the city.
