About Hamden

Hamden is a town of about 61,000 people just north of New Haven in southern Connecticut. Settled in the 1600s and incorporated in 1786, it is where Eli Whitney set up his famous factory, which pioneered interchangeable parts, along the Mill River at the foot of East Rock.

Hamden's best-known landmark is Sleeping Giant State Park, where a chain of trap rock hills is shaped like a reclining giant. Its popular Tower Trail climbs to a stone observation tower with views over Long Island Sound. Quinnipiac University sits at the foot of the Sleeping Giant, and the Eli Whitney Museum explores his inventions with hands-on workshops.

The town has a lively center around Whitney Avenue, with restaurants and shops, and the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail runs through town on an old canal and rail line. Brooksvale Park offers farm animals and trails, and downtown New Haven, with Yale University, is just minutes away.

Best seasonApril to October for Sleeping Giant hikes and fall foliage.
Ideal stayOne day for Sleeping Giant, the Eli Whitney Museum and the canal trail.
ArrivingTweed New Haven Airport is about 20 minutes south; Interstate 91 and the Wilbur Cross Parkway pass the town.
