About Oceanside

Oceanside is a coastal city in northern San Diego County, about 35 miles north of downtown San Diego. It is known for its long wooden pier, wide sandy beaches and relaxed surf-town atmosphere, with Camp Pendleton, the large Marine Corps base, stretching along the coast to the north.

The city grew around Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, founded in 1798 and still one of the largest of California's missions. The arrival of the railroad in the 1880s turned the coast into a beach resort, and the downtown still has historic buildings designed by architect Irving Gill, including the white Mission Revival civic center and the old Oceanside City Hall.

Today the waterfront is the main draw. The Oceanside Pier reaches far out over the surf, the Strand runs beside the beach, and the harbor to the north has colorful shops, a small lighthouse-style building and boat trips. The California Surf Museum and the Oceanside Museum of Art sit a short walk from the beach, and the Sunset Market brings food stalls downtown on Thursday evenings.

Best seasonJune to October for warm beach days, with mild, sunny weather most of the year.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the pier, harbor, beaches, museums and Mission San Luis Rey.
ArrivingSan Diego International Airport is about 45 minutes south, the Oceanside Transit Center serves Amtrak, Coaster and Metrolink trains, and Interstate 5 runs through the city.
