About Carlsbad

Carlsbad is a beach city on the north coast of San Diego County, with seven miles of shoreline, three coastal lagoons and a relaxed village by the sea. It takes its name from Karlsbad, the famous spa town in Bohemia, after mineral water found here in the 1880s was said to match the spring waters there. The old Santa Fe depot from 1887 still stands in the village and now welcomes visitors.

Carlsbad Village is a walkable mix of cafes, shops, restaurants and small inns a few blocks from the beach, where a long seawall walkway runs above the sand. To the south, the lagoons of Agua Hedionda and Batiquitos offer trails, birdwatching and paddling.

Families know Carlsbad for Legoland California, opened in 1999, and each spring the Flower Fields cover a hillside with bands of bright ranunculus. The city also has the Museum of Making Music, the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park and easy beaches for surfing, swimming and sunset walks.

Best seasonMarch to May for the Flower Fields and mild days; summer and early fall are best for the beach.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for the beaches and village, Legoland, the Flower Fields and the lagoons.
ArrivingSan Diego International Airport is about 35 minutes south, the Coaster train stops in Carlsbad Village, and Interstate 5 runs along the coast.
