About Isfahan

Turquoise domes, arcaded bridges and one of the grandest public squares on earth make Isfahan the showpiece of Persian architecture. Shah Abbas I moved the Safavid capital here in 1598 and rebuilt the city around Naqsh-e Jahan Square, flanked by royal mosques, a palace and the gateway to a vast covered bazaar. The old boast that "Isfahan is half the world" still feels earned when the tiles catch the evening light.

The city sits on the Zayandeh River in central Iran, at roughly 1,500 metres above sea level. Its heritage spans far more than one era: the Jameh Mosque shows almost a thousand years of building styles, while the New Julfa quarter keeps the churches of the Armenian community brought here in the Safavid period. Handicraft workshops still produce miniature paintings, enamel work and block-printed cloth.

Allow time to walk between the squares, gardens and river bridges, where locals gather at dusk. Kashan, with its historic houses and the Fin Garden, is a popular trip to the north.
