About Nasiriyah

Nasiriyah is the capital of Dhi Qar Governorate in southern Iraq, a city on the lower Euphrates about 360 kilometres south-east of Baghdad, and it is famous as the gateway to the ancient Sumerian city of Ur and its great ziggurat.

The city was founded by the Muntafiq tribe in the late 19th century under Ottoman rule and named after Nasir Pasha al-Saadun, and it grew into a transport hub and the centre of a date-growing region. Its plain was the heart of Sumer, where Eridu, traditionally the earliest city, rose along with Ur, Larsa, Lagash and Umma, and the Ubaid culture takes its name from a mound near Ur. To the east lie the Mesopotamian Marshes, listed by UNESCO in 2016.

Visitors come for the Ziggurat of Ur, the ruins of Ur and the house linked with Abraham, the reopened Nasiriyah Museum and the riverside corniche, then head out to the ancient mounds of Eridu, Larsa and Lagash and the reed-fringed waters of the Chibayish marshes.
