About Basrah

Basra is Iraq's great southern port city, set on the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf and famous for its date palms, its waterfront Corniche, the Basrah Museum and the tales of Sinbad the Sailor. Founded in 636 as an Arab garrison town, it became one of the early Islamic world's great centres of trade and learning, and today it is one of Iraq's largest cities.

The heart of the city follows the river: families stroll the Basra Corniche past the statue of the poet Badr Shakir al-Sayyab, boats run sunset trips on the Shatt al-Arab, and the Al-Ashar canal leads into the old commercial district, where shanasheel houses with carved wooden balconies survive. The Basrah Museum, in a former palace by the water, tells the story of Sumer, Babylon and the city itself.

Day trips lead north to Al-Qurnah, where the Tigris meets the Euphrates, to the Tomb of Ezra and into the reed-filled Mesopotamian Marshes. Summers are fiercely hot, so November to March is the time to visit; check current travel advice first.
