About Tashkent

Tashkent surprises people who expect only Soviet concrete. The capital of Uzbekistan mixes blue-domed madrasahs and a manuscript library holding one of the world's oldest Qurans with grand boulevards, shady parks and a metro whose stations double as underground palaces.

An ancient Silk Road oasis, the city came under Russian rule in 1865 and grew into the largest city of Soviet Central Asia. A devastating earthquake in 1966 flattened much of the old town, and the rebuilt capital gained broad avenues and monumental squares, while the Alisher Navoi Theatre, finished in 1947, survived. Since independence, Amir Timur has replaced old Soviet heroes on the main square.

Today Tashkent is the main gateway for trips to Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva, linked by fast trains. Give it time on its own terms: bargain for dried apricots under the dome of Chorsu Bazaar, eat plov straight from giant cauldrons at lunchtime, and ride the metro just to see the stations.
