Coatepec is a cool, green mountain town in the central highlands of Veracruz, about 1,200 metres above sea level and a short ride from the state capital, Xalapa. It is often called the coffee capital of Mexico, and the Pueblo Mágico title it received in 2006 fits a place of cobbled streets, a leafy main square and farms that grow orchids and coffee in the cloud forest.

AT A GLANCE

Best time

Spring is the driest season, while the rainy months of June to September bring mist and green hills.

How long

Allow two days in town and a third for Xico and Xalapa.

Getting there

Take a bus from Xalapa, which is only 13 km away.

Why visit Coatepec

Coatepec is a town to walk slowly. The historic centre is compact, the climate at this altitude is mild, and almost everything worth seeing sits within a few blocks of the main square.

Coffee shapes daily life here, from the farms in the surrounding countryside to the cafes around the plaza. Add a literary house museum, an orchid garden, a short hill climb and a handful of waterfalls, and you have a base that suits slow travel better than a checklist.

In the historic centre

Parque Miguel Hidalgo

Coatepec's main square is green, shaded and calmer than most of the town's traffic. A glorieta in the middle serves as a bandstand and doubles as a cafe, and the park is filled with statues, fountains and gardens.

Parroquia de San Jerónimo

The parish church faces the square and is named for the town's patron saint. Its baroque facade stands out on the square, and the interior is worth a short visit outside service times.

Casa Museo María Enriqueta

This house museum honours the poet María Enriqueta, who was born in Coatepec in 1872 and later lived in Mexico City, Cuba, Washington and Switzerland. Rooms of period decorative arts sit alongside galleries on poetry and local history.

Museo y Jardín de Orquídeas

The humid cloud forests around Coatepec support many orchid species, and a local collector has gathered a wide selection in this small museum and garden a few blocks from the square. Displays explain how orchids are grown and conserved.

Hills, farms and waterfalls

Cerro de las Culebras

Snake Hill rises right above the town and is easy to reach on foot.

Cascada Bola de Oro

The waterfall nearest to town lies on the grounds of a well-known coffee estate, which also has trails and a natural swimming pool. The route from town follows several small streets and bridges, so ask locally or have a taxi take you.

Mercado Bioregional Coatl

Held on Saturdays at the Casa de Cultura, this market sells organic and ecological products from the region. It is a good place to buy coffee, honey and snacks to take home.

Xico and the Cascada de Texolo

The nearby town of Xico became a Pueblo Mágico in 2011, and the Cascada de Texolo is about 3 km outside it. Xico is a short ride from Coatepec, so a half day trip is easy.

Xalapa

Xalapa, nicknamed the City of Flowers, is the second largest city in Veracruz and only 13 km away. An extinct volcano called Macuiltepetl now rises inside the city as a preserved park.

Food and local flavors

Coatepec coffee comes first, and nearly every cafe serves beans grown in the surrounding hills. For a full meal, try chilpachole, a spicy Veracruz soup, and the house trout dishes served at local restaurants, including smoked trout.

Good places to eat cluster around the centre, especially on the streets near Parque Miguel Hidalgo, and many restaurants occupy old houses with courtyards. On Saturday, head to the Mercado Bioregional Coatl for regional products.

Where to stay

Centro is the best base, because the main square, the church, the museums and the best restaurants are all within a few blocks, and you can leave the car parked.

Xalapa, 13 km away, suits travelers who want a larger choice of lodging, museums, restaurants and evening activity, with Coatepec reached by bus or taxi in a short ride. Xico is a smaller mountain town that suits visitors who want to be near the Cascada de Texolo and enjoy quieter evenings.

Best time to visit

Coatepec has a mild climate, with a yearly average of about 19.5 degrees Celsius. May is the warmest month, while January is the coolest, with chilly mornings and fog common in winter.

Rain peaks twice, in June and again in September, and the town sees rain on roughly 160 days a year, so a light rain jacket is useful at any time.

Getting there and getting around

Coatepec is 13 km from Xalapa, which has frequent bus service from the city of Veracruz, Puebla and Mexico City. The easiest way to reach Coatepec is by bus to Xalapa and then a short local bus or taxi ride.

If you rent a car in Mexico City, the drive to Coatepec takes about 4 hours on modern toll highways. Parking in the centre is limited, so park once and walk. The historic centre is compact and enjoyable on foot, and ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Didi operate in town alongside local taxis.

A suggested itinerary

First day

Spend the morning in the historic centre with the church, the main square and the Casa Museo María Enriqueta.

Second day

Head to Cascada Bola de Oro in the morning and finish with a long lunch of trout or chilpachole.

Third day

Take a day trip to Xico and the Cascada de Texolo, or ride to Xalapa for its city parks and museums.
