About Imperial Beach

Imperial Beach is as far southwest as you can go in the continental United States: the beach town's sand runs right up to the Mexican border, where Border Field State Park overlooks the fence and the hills of Tijuana. Locals call it IB, and it keeps a relaxed, unpolished surf-town feel only a few miles from downtown San Diego.

The long Imperial Beach Pier is the center of town, flanked by Portwood Pier Plaza and a short strip of surf shops, taco stands and cafes on Seacoast Drive. Helicopters from the nearby naval landing field often thump overhead. To the south, the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve protects one of the largest remaining coastal wetlands in Southern California, with trails and excellent birding.

Visitors should note one serious issue: cross-border sewage flows from the Tijuana River frequently close the ocean here, so check county water-quality notices before swimming or surfing. On the bay side, the Bayshore Bikeway loops north toward Coronado.

Best seasonSeptember to November for warm, clear days; spring for wetland birding.
Ideal stayOne day, or two with the estuary and Border Field State Park.
ArrivingSan Diego International Airport is about 20 minutes north; MTS buses link to the Blue Line trolley.
