About Davenport

Davenport is the largest of the Quad Cities, a river city of about 100,000 people on the west bank of the Mississippi River where Iowa faces Illinois. Founded in 1836, it grew as a busy river port and railroad hub, and its downtown and hillside neighborhoods are full of grand 19th-century buildings. Jazz legend Bix Beiderbecke was born here, and the city celebrates him every summer.

The riverfront is the place to start. Modern Woodmen Park, home of the Quad Cities River Bandits, is one of the most scenic minor league ballparks in the country, with a Ferris wheel beyond the outfield, and the Davenport Skybridge glows with colored lights over River Drive. The Figge Art Museum, the Putnam Museum and the restored Capitol Theatre anchor the arts downtown.

The Village of East Davenport keeps a 19th-century main street of shops and cafés near the river, the Freight House hosts a year-round farmers market, and Vander Veer Botanical Park is known for its fountain, rose garden and conservatory. Bike paths follow the Mississippi for miles, and LeClaire Park's bandshell hosts summer concerts and the Bix Jazz Festival.

Best seasonMay to September for baseball, riverfront festivals and the Bix 7 race in July.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the riverfront, museums and East Davenport.
ArrivingQuad Cities International Airport in Moline is about 10 miles southeast across the river.
