About Sierra Vista

Sierra Vista calls itself the Hummingbird Capital of the United States, and with good reason: more than a dozen hummingbird species visit the canyons of the Huachuca Mountains above town and draw birders from around the world. The city sits at about 4,600 feet on the high grassland of southeastern Arizona, so summers are milder than in Tucson.

The town grew up around Fort Huachuca, an Army post founded in 1877 during the Apache Wars and later home to the Buffalo Soldiers; it now hosts the Army's intelligence center, and its historical museum is open to visitors with identification. East of town, the San Pedro River, one of the last free-flowing rivers in the Southwest, is protected as a national conservation area where cottonwood forests shelter hundreds of bird species, and the Murray Springs Clovis Site records mammoth hunters from about 13,000 years ago.

The Huachucas offer cool canyon hikes in Ramsey, Carr and Miller canyons, and Coronado National Memorial looks south into Mexico from Montezuma Pass. Tombstone, Bisbee and the Kartchner Caverns are all within about 45 minutes.

Best seasonMarch to May and September to November; late July and August for peak hummingbird numbers during the monsoon.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for canyons, the river and day trips to Bisbee and Tombstone.
ArrivingTucson International Airport is about 75 miles northwest via I-10 and AZ-90.
