About San Juan Capistrano

San Juan Capistrano is a small historic city in south Orange County, set in a green valley a few miles inland from Dana Point and the Pacific. It grew around Mission San Juan Capistrano, founded in 1776 by Father Junípero Serra as the seventh of California's 21 Spanish missions. In 1797 the mission's builders began the Great Stone Church, the largest structure in Spanish California, but an earthquake brought it down in 1812, and its romantic ruins remain the heart of the town. The Acjachemen people, whose ancestors lived here long before the Spanish, are still an important part of the community.

Today San Juan Capistrano has about 35,000 residents and keeps the feel of an old mission town, with strict limits on development, horse trails and open space. Its compact downtown is easy to explore on foot: Camino Capistrano is lined with Spanish Revival buildings, restaurants and shops, the 1894 Santa Fe depot still serves Amtrak and Metrolink trains, and the Los Rios Historic District, one of the oldest residential streets in California, has adobes and board-and-batten cottages from the 1790s onward, many now cafes and boutiques.

The mission itself is one of California's most beautiful historic sites, with gardens, fountains, the bell wall, the Serra Chapel with its gilded altarpiece and the stone church ruins. The town is famous for the swallows that traditionally return each March, celebrated with the Swallows Day Parade and Fiesta de las Golondrinas. Nearby, the modern Mission Basilica echoes the design of the fallen stone church, and beaches at Doheny State Beach and Dana Point are only ten minutes away.

Best seasonMarch for the swallows festival and spring gardens, and September to November for warm, clear days; the climate is mild year round.
Ideal stayOne full day for the mission, Los Rios Historic District and downtown, easily combined with nearby Dana Point beaches.
ArrivingJohn Wayne Airport is about 30 minutes north, Interstate 5 runs through town, and Amtrak and Metrolink trains stop at the historic depot downtown.
