About East Hartford

East Hartford is a town of about 51,000 people on the east bank of the Connecticut River, directly across from downtown Hartford. Settled in the 1630s as part of Hartford and incorporated separately in 1783, it became an industrial town in the 20th century as the home of Pratt and Whitney, the aircraft engine maker that still has its headquarters here.

The town's riverfront has been reclaimed for recreation. Great River Park sits on the levee across from the Hartford skyline, with trails, a boat launch and some of the best views of the capital city, linked to downtown Hartford by the Founders Bridge. The Hockanum River Linear Trail and the Charter Oak Greenway follow green corridors through town for walking and biking.

On the site of the former Rentschler Field airport, Pratt and Whitney Stadium hosts UConn football, international soccer and concerts. Wickham Park, on the border with Manchester, offers gardens and woodland trails, and Hartford's museums and the Connecticut Science Center are minutes away across the river.

Best seasonMay to October for riverfront trails, football and concerts.
Ideal stayHalf a day, or a base for visiting Hartford.
ArrivingBradley International Airport is about 25 minutes north; I-84 and Route 2 cross the town and bridges link it to downtown Hartford.
