About Agawam

Roller coaster screams carry across the Connecticut River from Agawam, the town that hosts Six Flags New England, the largest theme park in the region. On the west bank opposite Springfield, the town otherwise feels like a mix of quiet suburbs and old farm country, with the village of Feeding Hills spreading west toward the hills.

Agawam was settled in the 1600s as part of Springfield and became a separate town in 1855. The amusement park on its riverbank began early in the twentieth century as Riverside Park, grew into a regional favorite and was rebranded under Six Flags in 2000. Colonial houses on Main Street, such as the eighteenth-century Captain Charles Leonard House, recall the farming town that came before the thrill rides.

Beyond the park, Robinson State Park follows the Westfield River with wooded trails, and a riverside walkway and bikeway runs along the Connecticut. Springfield's museums, the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Big E fairgrounds in neighboring West Springfield are all within a few miles.

Best seasonLate May through October, when Six Flags New England and its water park are open; October for fall events at the park.
Ideal stayOne day for the park, two days with Springfield and Robinson State Park.
ArrivingAbout 15 minutes from downtown Springfield via Route 57 or Route 159; Bradley International Airport in Connecticut is about 25 minutes south.
