About Wethersfield

Founded in 1634, Wethersfield calls itself Connecticut's most ancient town, and few places in New England keep their colonial past so intact. Old Wethersfield, the historic core, holds well over a hundred houses built before 1850 along tree-lined Main Street and the long Broad Street Green, just south of Hartford.

The town grew rich shipping onions, grain and timber from its river cove, and its merchants built fine houses. In May 1781 George Washington met the Comte de Rochambeau at the Webb House to plan the campaign that ended at Yorktown. The Buttolph-Williams House inspired the setting of the novel The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

Visitors can tour three historic houses in one visit, browse heirloom seeds at a seed company founded in 1820, and walk to the quiet cove where an early warehouse still stands. Hartford's museums and Rocky Hill's dinosaur tracks are each about 10 minutes away.

Best seasonMay to October, when house museums run full tour schedules; December brings candlelight events.
Ideal stayA half day to a full day for Old Wethersfield.
ArrivingBradley International Airport is about 25 minutes north; I-91 exit 26 leads straight to the old town.
