About Napa Valley

Napa Valley runs north from San Pablo Bay through California's Coast Ranges, a narrow, sunlit valley lined with vineyards. Winemaking began here in the nineteenth century, and a 1976 Paris tasting in which Napa wines beat French rivals helped bring it international fame. The valley is especially celebrated for Cabernet Sauvignon.

The city of Napa, at the southern end, has a revitalized riverfront and the food stalls of Oxbow Public Market, and the Napa Valley Wine Train departs from here for a leisurely ride up the valley. Los Carneros, cooled by breezes off the bay, specializes in pinot noir and sparkling wine. Yountville is known for acclaimed restaurants, and Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville was one of the first major wineries built after Prohibition. The Silverado Trail, along the eastern side, runs through the Stags Leap District. St. Helena's Main Street holds shops and cafes, Beringer is among the valley's oldest wineries, and the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone occupies a historic stone winery. Farther north, Bale Grist Mill and Bothe-Napa Valley State Park add history and hiking, and Castello di Amorosa recreates a medieval castle near Calistoga.

Napa suits couples, food lovers and wine enthusiasts. Most wineries require reservations, and costs run high. Calistoga is known for hot springs, and Sonoma lies just over the hills.

Best seasonSeptember and October bring harvest season and warm days; spring is green and quieter.
Ideal stayTwo to three days allows several tastings, a standout meal and a scenic drive.
ArrivingMost visitors fly into San Francisco, Oakland or Sacramento and drive to the valley.
