About Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve

The Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve covers a chain of islands and islets strung along Quebec's Côte-Nord, on the northern shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Wind, waves and frost have carved the limestone here into freestanding monoliths, some shaped like faces, flowerpots or arches. The landscape is spare and maritime, with low boreal vegetation, rare plants and bare rock shelves washed by cold water.

Boat excursions from Havre-Saint-Pierre and Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan drop visitors on islands where short trails lead past the formations. Petite île au Marteau and Île Nue de Mingan are known for their monoliths, while Île aux Perroquets, with its lighthouse, sits near seabird colonies that include Atlantic puffins. Experienced paddlers explore by sea kayak and camp on primitive island sites. Whales feed in these waters, and the Mingan Island Cetacean Study station in Longue-Pointe offers insight into ongoing research on them.

The Innu community of Ekuanitshit shares this coast and its long history on the land, and the village of Baie-Johan-Beetz lies farther east. Services are limited, so this trip suits self-reliant travelers comfortable with changeable weather and long drives. Summer is the main season, when boats run regularly. Packing warm layers is wise even in July.

Best seasonJuly and August, when boat shuttles run, seabirds nest and the weather is mildest.
Ideal stayThree to four days allows several island visits and a margin for weather delays.
ArrivingMost travelers drive Route 138 along the North Shore to Havre-Saint-Pierre, which also has a small airport.
