About Kaneohe

Rain-carved cliffs of the Koolau Range rise straight behind Kaneohe, and in front lies Kaneohe Bay, the largest sheltered bay in Hawaii, with coral reefs, a famous sandbar and a small island used for marine research. This Windward Oahu town of about 35,000 people is a 20-minute drive from Honolulu through the Likelike or H-3 tunnels, yet it feels far greener and more relaxed.

Hawaiians farmed taro and built fishponds along this shore for centuries; the 600-year-old Heeia Fishpond is still being restored by the community. Later ranching and a large military presence shaped the area, and the Marine Corps base still occupies the Mokapu Peninsula.

Visitors come for the scenery. The Byodo-In Temple, a replica of a Japanese temple, sits beneath the cliffs in the Valley of the Temples, while Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden spreads around a reservoir at the foot of the mountains. Boat tours head out to the sandbar, and the beaches and ranches of the North Shore drive lie just up the coast.

Best seasonApril to October brings drier days; winter is greener with more passing showers.
Ideal stayOne or two days from Honolulu, or a base for exploring the Windward coast.
ArrivingDaniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu is about 25 minutes away via the H-3 freeway.
