About Honolulu

Honolulu, Hawaii's capital and largest city, stretches along the southern shore of Oahu between the Koolau Range and the Pacific. It blends a busy urban center with beaches, hiking trails and cultural sites. The city was the seat of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the nineteenth century, and its history, from Native Hawaiian traditions to World War II, remains present across the island.

Waikiki Beach is the city's best-known stretch of sand, lined with hotels and surf schools. At its eastern end, Diamond Head, a volcanic crater, has a summit trail with views over the coast, while Kapiolani Park and the Waikiki Aquarium offer quieter green space. Pearl Harbor National Memorial honors those lost in the 1941 attack, with the USS Arizona Memorial reached by boat. Downtown, Iolani Palace, the only royal palace on U.S. soil, sits near the capitol district, and Chinatown has markets and galleries. The Bishop Museum focuses on Hawaiian and Pacific culture and natural history. East of the city, Hanauma Bay is a protected snorkeling cove that requires reservations, and the Manoa Falls Trail climbs through rainforest. The Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail overlooks the island's windward coast.

Honolulu suits travelers wanting beaches, culture and convenient dining. The North Shore, known for big winter surf, is an easy day trip. The climate is warm year-round, with winter bringing more rain.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October offer pleasant weather with smaller crowds and lower demand.
Ideal stayFour to five days covers Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, cultural sites and a trip to the North Shore.
