About Kamouraska

Kamouraska is a village on the south shore of the St. Lawrence in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, where the river is so wide it resembles the sea. Founded in the French colonial period, it has a long main street of historic homes facing the water, and its name became familiar to many through Anne Hébert's novel of the same title.

The village is famous for sunsets, when crowds gather along the shore to watch the light fade behind the north shore mountains. Its heritage includes eel fishing, with traditional weirs once stretched across the tidal flats, and local smokehouses still sell fish. The salt marshes and wide batture attract birds and are crossed by dikes that reflect centuries of land reclamation. Cafes, bakeries and small shops line the main street. Route 132 links Kamouraska with neighboring villages such as Rivière-Ouelle and the town of La Pocatière.

Kamouraska suits travelers on a scenic drive who enjoy unhurried evenings, cycling and local food. It makes a good overnight stop on the way east to Rivière-du-Loup, Parc national du Bic or Trois-Pistoles. Summer and early fall are the main seasons, when the light is long and outdoor terraces are open.

Best seasonJune to September brings long evenings, open terraces and the famous river sunsets.
Ideal stayOne night is enough to enjoy a sunset and walk the village.
ArrivingTravelers drive Highway 20 or Route 132 east from Quebec City along the south shore.
