About Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and occupies an island on the Persian Gulf coast, with newer districts spreading across neighboring islands. Fishing and pearl diving sustained the settlement for generations before oil transformed it in the second half of the twentieth century. The city today feels more spacious and measured than its neighbor Dubai, with an emphasis on culture, heritage and large-scale museums.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the city's defining landmark, a vast white complex of marble domes, reflecting pools and intricate floral inlay that welcomes visitors outside prayer times. Qasr Al Watan, a working presidential palace, opens its grand halls and library to the public, while Qasr Al Hosn, the city's oldest stone building, tells the story of its early rulers. The Corniche offers a long waterfront promenade and beaches, with the Heritage Village nearby. On Saadiyat Island, the Louvre Abu Dhabi sits beneath a latticed dome, alongside the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena and quiet beaches.

Families gravitate to Yas Island, with its theme parks and the Yas Marina Circuit, which hosts a Formula One race. Paddling through the Mangrove National Park offers a calmer contrast. Cooler months are best, since summer temperatures are punishing.

Best seasonNovember to March offers warm, comfortable weather; summer is extremely hot and humid.
Ideal stayThree to four days covers the mosque, palaces, Saadiyat museums and time on Yas Island.
ArrivingAbu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport is the main gateway, and Dubai is roughly an hour and a half away by road.
