About Barra de Potosí
Barra de Potosí is a small fishing village on the Pacific coast of Guerrero, a short drive south of Zihuatanejo. It sits where a long beach meets the mouth of Laguna Potosí, a mangrove-fringed lagoon rich in birdlife. Life here is quiet and unpretentious, with dirt lanes, fishing boats and simple palm-roofed restaurants.
Playa Blanca stretches for miles toward the north, offering long walks with few other people, while offshore rock formations break the horizon and attract seabirds. The enramadas, open-air restaurants under palm-thatched roofs, serve grilled fish and seafood right on the sand, where hammocks invite long afternoons. Kayaking through the channels of the lagoon is a highlight, often combined with birdwatching in the mangroves for herons, egrets, pelicans and other species. In winter, boat trips set out to watch humpback whales that migrate along the coast.
Barra de Potosí suits travelers looking for nature and quiet rather than resort amenities. Accommodation is limited to small guesthouses and rentals. The town of Petatlán, with its Santuario del Padre Jesús, makes a cultural side trip, and Zihuatanejo's Playa La Ropa and Playa Las Gatas are close by for more conventional beach days.
Best seasonDecember to April brings dry weather, calm seas and the humpback whale season.
