About Zirahuén

Zirahuén is a small Purépecha village on the shore of a deep, clear lake in the pine-covered highlands south of Pátzcuaro. Hills rise steeply around the water, and morning mist often lingers over the surface, giving the lake a calm, secluded atmosphere quite different from the busier Lake Pátzcuaro nearby.

Most visitors come to enjoy Lake Zirahuén itself, taking boat rides, paddling kayaks, swimming in its cool water or eating fresh fish at simple lakeside restaurants. Some lodges and cabins around the shore add zip-lines, horseback riding and forest walks. The village of Zirahuén keeps a modest, everyday rhythm. A short drive away, the coppersmiths of Santa Clara del Cobre welcome visitors into their workshops, and Pátzcuaro's Plaza Vasco de Quiroga and Plaza Chica, the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Salud, the Casa de los Once Patios and the Biblioteca Gertrudis Bocanegra fill a day of sightseeing.

Zirahuén suits couples and families seeking quiet nature and a cabin by the water rather than nightlife. It works well as a peaceful base for exploring the Pátzcuaro region, including boat trips to Janitzio, the ruins of Tzintzuntzan and the lakeside crafts town of Erongarícuaro. Nights are cool, especially in winter.

Best seasonOctober to April brings dry days and clear water; nights in the highlands are chilly.
Ideal stayOne to two nights, or longer as a quiet base for the Pátzcuaro area.
ArrivingVisitors drive from Pátzcuaro or Morelia, which has the nearest airport.
