About Tokushima

Tokushima is the capital city of Tokushima Prefecture on Shikoku, Japan, at the mouth of the Yoshino River, famous for the Awa Odori dance festival each August and for Mount Bizan, the symbol of the city. Its top sights are Mount Bizan, the Tokushima Castle ruins and garden, the Awa Odori Kaikan and temples of the Shikoku Pilgrimage.

Tokushima grew as the castle town of the Hachisuka clan, lords of Tokushima Domain, and prospered on the indigo dye trade, which by the end of the Edo period made it one of Japan's ten most populous castle towns. It became a city on 1 October 1889, and an air raid on 3 July 1945 destroyed 74% of its built-up area.

Tokushima covers 191.52 km² and had about 245,000 people in 2024. Its Awa Odori has some 400 years of history and draws about 1.3 million visitors over four days in August, and temples 13 to 17 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage lie on the edge of the city.
