About Fukui-shi

Fukui is the capital city of Fukui Prefecture, Japan, on the plain of the Kuzuryū River by the Sea of Japan, nicknamed the Phoenix City for rising again after war and earthquake. Its top sights are the Ichijōdani Asakura Family Historic Ruins, Yōkōkan Garden, Fukui Castle and the cherry trees along the Asuwa River.

The Asakura clan ruled Echizen from the Ichijōdani valley, a town of over 10,000 people at its height, until Oda Nobunaga destroyed it in 1573, and Shibata Katsuie then built Kitanoshō Castle here in 1575. In the Edo period Fukui was the castle town of Fukui Domain under the Matsudaira, and the modern city was founded on 1 April 1889.

Fukui covers 536.41 km² and had about 255,000 people in 2024. Bombing in 1945 destroyed 84.8% of the city and an earthquake struck in 1948, and the city is also known as the home of sauce katsudon, created by the restaurant Yoroppaken.
