About Toyohashi

Toyohashi is a city in eastern Aichi Prefecture, Japan, on the old Tōkaidō between Mikawa Bay and the Pacific, famous for Yoshida Castle, its streetcar line and the tezutsu hand-held fireworks of its summer festivals. Its top sights are Yoshida Castle, Nonhoi Park, the Toyohashi Orthodox Church, Fumon-ji and the Imō Wetland.

Yoshida Castle was first built in 1505 and later enlarged by Ikeda Terumasa, and in the Edo period its town was the seat of Yoshida Domain and a post station at a Tōkaidō river crossing. The domain was renamed Toyohashi in 1869, the town became a city in 1906, and an air raid in June 1945 destroyed more than 60 percent of it.

Toyohashi covers 261.86 km² and had an estimated 377,453 people in 2019. Its Toyotetsu streetcar has been the only tram in the Tōkai region since 2005, and the city is known for chikuwa fish cakes and as Japan's top producer of quail eggs.
