About Osaka

Osaka eats first and asks questions later. Japan's third-largest city has long called itself the nation's kitchen, and the neon canyon of Dotonbori, the takoyaki stands and the kushikatsu counters of Shinsekai prove it every night. Locals are famously direct and funny, and the city feels louder and warmer than Tokyo.

As Naniwa, the area served as an early imperial capital, and Shitennoji, founded in 593, is among the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan. Toyotomi Hideyoshi began Osaka Castle in 1583, and under the Edo shoguns the city became the great merchant and rice-trading hub of the country, criss-crossed by canals. Today the river island of Nakanoshima holds museums and a red-brick public hall, while towers such as the Umeda Sky Building and Abeno Harukas look out over a vast modern city.

Kansai International Airport sits on an island in Osaka Bay, and Shinkansen trains stop at Shin-Osaka. Kyoto, Nara and Kobe are all within an hour by train, making Osaka an ideal base for the Kansai region.
