About Hirakata

Hirakata is a city in northeastern Osaka Prefecture, Japan, on the left bank of the Yodo River about halfway between Osaka and Kyoto. Its name appears in the oldest Japanese chronicles, and today it is best known for Hirakata Park, the oldest amusement park in Japan still running, and for the legends of the Tanabata star festival tied to the plain of Katano.

In the 8th century the royal Kudara clan, descended from the kings of Baekje in Korea, built its temple here. In the Edo period Hirakata grew into a post town on the Kyō Kaidō road and a busy river port, where little boats sold food to passengers on the Yodo riverboats. The Keihan railway arrived in 1910, and the city grew into a large commuter town. Today it is home to about 390,000 people.

Walk the old post town and the riverside Kagiya inn, then explore the ruins of Kudara-dera and the alleged tomb of the scholar Wani. Spend an afternoon at Hirakata Park, stroll Yamadaike Park, and follow the Amano River of the Tanabata legend.
