About Ichinomiya

Ichinomiya is a city in north-western Aichi Prefecture, Japan, on the Kiso River at the border with Gifu, famous as the shrine town of Masumida Shrine, as the heart of Bishū wool weaving and for its Tanabata festival. Its top sights are Masumida Shrine, Twin Arch 138, the Zen temple Myōkō-ji and Kenzō Tange's Sumi Kaikan.

The city takes its name from Masumida Shrine, the ichinomiya or first shrine of Owari Province, and grew as the town before its gate. Bishū, centred on Ichinomiya, is counted among the world's three great wool-weaving districts, and weaving here goes back to the Heian period.

Ichinomiya became a city on 1 September 1921 and absorbed Bisai and Kisogawa in 2005; it covers 113.82 km² and had about 380,000 people in 2019. It is known as the birthplace of the café morning service, and its July Tanabata festival, held since 1956, draws more than 1.3 million visitors.
