About Kobe

Kobe squeezes a whole city onto a thin strip of land between the Rokko mountains and Osaka Bay, so you can ride a ropeway to a summit, soak in an ancient hot spring and stroll a harbour promenade on the same day. Home to about 1.5 million people, it has a cosmopolitan, unhurried feel that sets it apart from nearby Osaka and Kyoto.

When the port opened to foreign trade in 1868, merchants from Europe, America and China settled here, leaving the wooden Western houses of Kitano and the lively streets of Nankinmachi. The Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995 devastated the city, and a preserved section of shattered quay at Meriken Park recalls how far Kobe has rebuilt since then.

Highlights include the red Port Tower, Ikuta Shrine, the falls behind Shin-Kobe Station and the sake breweries of Nada. Kobe beef, Chinese street food and Western-style bakeries make it a great eating city, while Arima Onsen and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge lie within the city limits.
