About Lafayette

Lafayette is a city of about 70,000 people on the Wabash River in west-central Indiana, across the river from West Lafayette and Purdue University. Founded in 1825 and named after the Marquis de Lafayette, the French hero of the American Revolution, it grew as a river and canal port on the Wabash and Erie Canal.

The Tippecanoe County Courthouse, completed in 1884, is one of the grandest in Indiana, with a tall dome and statues on its exterior. The surrounding downtown has restored brick buildings, restaurants and the Long Center for the Performing Arts, and Riehle Plaza and the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge connect downtown with West Lafayette across the river.

Purdue University, known for engineering and as the alma mater of many astronauts, is a short walk over the bridge. Columbian Park has a zoo and water park, the Wabash Heritage Trail follows the river, and Tippecanoe Battlefield, where the 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe was fought, is just north of the city.

Best seasonMay to October for river trails, festivals and Purdue football.
Ideal stayOne to two days for downtown, the courthouse, the river bridges and Purdue.
ArrivingIndianapolis International Airport is about an hour southeast; Amtrak's Cardinal stops at the downtown depot.
