About Decatur

Decatur is a city of about 70,000 people in central Illinois, set on the Sangamon River and the shores of Lake Decatur. Known as the Soybean Capital of the World, it grew around grain processing and manufacturing, and it remains a major agribusiness center. It also has strong ties to Abraham Lincoln, whose family settled nearby in 1830.

The lake is the city's playground, with Nelson Park, the Devon Lakeshore Amphitheater and boating and fishing along its shore. Families visit Scovill Zoo and the Children's Museum of Illinois, while history fans can tour the James Millikin Homestead, the Macon County History Museum with its log courthouse and pioneer village, and the Hieronymus Mueller Museum of local inventions. The octagonal Transfer House is the downtown landmark.

Rock Springs Nature Center offers trails through prairie and woods, and the Lincoln Trail Homestead State Memorial, west of town, marks the Lincoln family's first Illinois home. Springfield is about 40 miles west.

Best seasonMay to September for the lake, zoo and outdoor concerts.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the lakefront, museums and Lincoln sites.
ArrivingDecatur Airport has limited flights; Springfield and Bloomington-Normal airports are under an hour away by car.
