About Pelotas

Pelotas is a city in the south of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, set beside the Lagoa dos Patos and famous for the grand 19th-century buildings of its historic centre, for its traditional sweets and for sights such as the Praça Coronel Pedro Osório and the Theatro Sete de Abril.

In the 19th century Pelotas grew rich on charque, the salted dried meat made in charqueadas worked by enslaved Africans. The wealth of the charqueadores paid for mansions, theatres and a public library, and the square at the heart of the centre was listed as national heritage in 2018. The city's sweet-making tradition is celebrated each year at the Fenadoce fair, held since 1986.

Visitors explore the Mercado Público, the Pelotas Cathedral with its Aldo Locatelli frescoes and the gardens of the Museu da Baronesa. On the lagoon shore, the Laranjal offers a beach on the Lagoa dos Patos, while the long ocean beach of Cassino and the Molhes da Barra lie further south near Rio Grande.
