About Olinda

Olinda is a historic hill town on the Atlantic coast of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil, 6 km north of Recife, famous for its colonial center of Baroque churches and convents, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for its free street carnival with giant puppets.

Founded in 1535 by Duarte Coelho, Olinda was the capital of the Captaincy of Pernambuco and among the richest towns of colonial Brazil, once called a little Lisbon. Dutch invaders burned it in 1631, and most of its churches were rebuilt in the following decades. In 1982 its old upper town became the second Brazilian historic center, after Ouro Preto, to be listed by UNESCO.

Climb the steep streets to the Alto da Sé for the cathedral and the views toward Recife, then visit the São Bento Monastery, the São Francisco Convent and the Carmo church. Leave time for the puppet and art museums, and come in carnival season to see the giant puppets parade through the streets.

Best seasonSeptember to February for dry weather; carnival in February or March
