About Tandil

On the flat Pampas of Buenos Aires province, Tandil comes as a surprise: a ring of ancient granite hills, the Sierras de Tandil, rises around the town, with rocky summits, a lake and quiet valleys a few minutes from the main square. The town began in 1823 as Fuerte Independencia, a frontier fort, and grew into a prosperous farming and quarrying centre settled by Spanish, Italian and Basque immigrants.

Tandil's most famous symbol is the Piedra Movediza, a huge boulder that once rocked on the edge of a hill until it fell in 1912; a replica now stands in its place. Holy Week brings pilgrims to the Stations of the Cross on Monte Calvario, and Parque Independencia, crowned by a Moorish-style castle, overlooks the town.

Weekends fill with visitors from Buenos Aires who come to hike, climb, ride the chairlift up Cerro El Centinela and eat. The town is celebrated for its cured salami and cheeses, best tasted on a picada board in one of its old corner shops.
