About Taubaté

Taubaté is a city in the Paraíba Valley of São Paulo state, about 130 km from the state capital, famous as the birthplace of the writer Monteiro Lobato, as the national capital of children's literature in Brazil and as a base for trips to Campos do Jordão and Aparecida.

Founded in the 17th century, the town grew rich on coffee in the 1800s, gaining a railway station in 1876, and in 1906 it gave its name to the Taubaté Agreement on coffee prices, signed by the leaders of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. Its old churches, the Convento de Santa Clara and the Capela do Pilar recall those times.

Visitors tour the farmhouse of the Sítio do Picapau Amarelo, the Museu Mazzaropi and the Italian heritage of the Quiririm district. Beyond the city, the mountain resort of Campos do Jordão and its railway, the colonial town of São Luiz do Paraitinga and the vast Basilica of Aparecida are all within easy reach.
