About Londrina

Londrina is the second-largest city of Paraná in southern Brazil, a modern university city in the north of the state famous for its British-inspired name, meaning Little London, and for the coffee boom that built it. The land was opened up from 1929 by the Companhia de Terras Norte do Paraná, a British-backed colonisation company, and the town became a municipality in 1934.

Settlers from Japan, Italy, Germany and other parts of Brazil cleared the red-earth forest for coffee, and the wealth of the 1950s left a striking modernist heritage. The old bus station by architect Vilanova Artigas is now the Museu de Arte, the old railway station holds the city's history museum, and the chalet-shaped cathedral rises over the centre.

Londrina is green too. Lago Igapó, an artificial lake opened in 1959, has a garden by Roberto Burle Marx, and parks such as Arthur Thomas and Daisaku Ikeda protect patches of the Atlantic Forest. Further out lie the old-growth woods of Mata dos Godoy State Park and the tall Apucaraninha waterfall on Kaingang indigenous land.
